Vineyards

A continent within a fifteen-kilometre radiusHow do six-thousand hectares of vineyards surrounding a small south-western Sicilian town contain such beauty? Describing it isn’t enough, we invite you to experience it in person: the intense sunlight that shines for 300 days per year; the proximity to the Mediterranean Sea from which the breezes blow cooling our vineyards during the hottest days; five different soils that nourish over 30 cultivars, the widest variety in Sicily; six different territories with their peculiarities and biodiversity, from the forest to the lake, from the coast to the high hills, passing through the slopes and marine terraces.

  • The coast

A mix of dunes and coves dotted with sea lilies, rushes and palmettos: an uncontaminated coast of Mediterranean bush, surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see, among salty scents and sea breezes that resemble the warm African winds. The crystal-clear sea, intense light and unique microclimate make our vineyards healthy and provide excellent quality grapes.

  • The slopes

Created over time by the currents of the waterways, where tens of small rivers and the Belice and Carboj currently flow, the slopes span across our territory from the sea to the hills. Through these channels, the sea breezes rise from the coast and blow inland, softening the climate of the territory, alleviating the south-eastern winds and cooling the vineyards. The route travels from South to North showing how the pedoclimate affects the harvesting season of our grapes.

  • The sea-terraces

Six classes of terraces, high grounds levelled by the sea and variation in sea level during the different ice ages, which leave the evidence (one of a kind) of the geological history of this land, where the ancient and recent terrains meet and overlap. Red, sandy, fertile and iron-rich soils bear witness of the geography of the coast over thousands of years and of the geological eras: here, it appears as if our vines grow on dry seabed, with rocks, seashells and sea-fossils.

  • The high hills

This territory is the coolest, highest, rainiest, furthest from the sea and most inland among all of our cultivated lands. A pedoclimatic condition that provides a positive impact on our vineyard: in fact, they grow on cool lands because the soils – chalky, clay-rich and with a medium mixture – retain the rainwater, gradually releasing it to the plant.
